Lord Redesdale is a well-known industry leader. He started working in the area of legislation as the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson in the House of Lords in 2000 and has since covered most pieces of energy and water regulation and legislation. The motivation for working in the sector is based on Lord Redesdale’s concerns around climate change which led him to co-found the All-Party Climate Change Group in 2001 and founded the Energy Managers Association in 2012 which he held the position of CEO until his retirement to focus on the Metals Industry Sector.
He is the Chairman of the UK Metals Expo and in the area of energy and carbon regulation, Lord Redesdale has helped to develop policies, including the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), and more recently the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) regime. Lord Redesdale has a particular interest in building carbon management capabilities for our sector and ensuring business large and small are empowered to make the necessary transition to Net Zero 2050 UK.
Originally from New Zealand, Mike has an impressive domestic and international experience in Environmental Services and Carbon Management. Working for the New Zealand government, he commercialised the world’s first internationally accredited Greenhouse Gas Certification Scheme, enabling business large and small to robustly measure, manage and report their Carbon Footprints compliant to GHG accounting protocol and the ISO standards for carbon.
He has been the Executive Director of the Carbon Market Institute, the Australian Peak Industry Body for Carbon Professionals, and has worked as General Manager Global Operations for one of the world’s largest and most successful Carbon Developers. Mike has also been a Board Member of The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA) during his time working in the City of London and has worked with some of the largest UK carbon neutral businesses.
Mike holds an MBA and is a recent graduate from Cambridge University Net Zero leadership programme. Affectionately known as “The Carbon Guy” Mike works with government, industry and businesses alike to demystify carbon markets, provides practical strategic and operational advice to enable and empower participants to manage the risks related to transition to a low carbon future

Carbon Neutrality’ or ‘Carbon Zero’ is achieved when an organisation, product or service has accurately measured their greenhouse gas emissions, and put in place strategies to manage, reduce, and offset their impacts.
These climate action programmes play a vital role in accelerating the global transition towards Net Zero by enabling organisations to take full responsibility for their carbon emissions today, while they plan and deliver longer term changes alongside national initiatives for decarbonisation.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has defined Net Zero targets for corporates as follows:‘To reach a state of net zero emissions for companies implies two conditions:
1.To achieve a scale of value-chain emission reductions consistent with the depth of abatement achieved in pathways that limit warming to 1.5°C with no or limited overshoot and;
2. To neutralise the impact of any source of residual emissions that remains unfeasible to be eliminated by permanently removing an equivalent amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide.’
While working on longer-term solutions to minimise their emissions, businesses can mitigate their emissions and achieve carbon zero neutrality by buying and cancelling carbon offsets in the form of carbon credits. Each carbon credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) and allows the organisation to offset its own emissions by paying for equivalent decarbonisation elsewhere in the world.
Not all Carbon Offsets are equal. You have to tread carefully with carbon offsets: some make a valuable contribution to carbon reduction, removing at least a tonne of CO2e per credit; others amount to little more than greenwashing, which do nothing to slow climate change. It can be hard for nonspecialists to tell between the virtuous offsets and the junk credits. Our experts will explore what robust offset programmes best meet your business needs and assist you step by step.to manage the inherent risk in this complex and sometimes confusing market.
